Ideal for new industry entrants and floral assistants, the competencies in this level of qualification offer training in the essential skills expected of them in the job functions in the floristry industry.

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, participants will have the knowledge and application skills to dress and enhance commercial floristry work. The unit covers techniques to identify and construct bows (flat, puff chair bows) with various types of ribbons and other suitable materials, materials, and methods for wrapping, forms of boxes, bags, and containers, and the use of other decorative accessories for a variety of basic commercial floristry products. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home the designs created in class.

1. Identify and use tools and equipment to prepare and secure dressings 
2. Identify the types and purposes of ribbons commonly used to dress floral product 
3. Prepare simple bows from a variety of commonly used ribbons 
4. Dress selection of floral products with standard wrapping 
5. Identify the types and purposes of decorative bags, boxes and containers commonly used in floristry 
6. Recognise and use a selection of decorative accessories and floral hardware 
7. Select suitable types of cards, envelopes, cardholders and message holders for use in floristry

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, the participant will have the knowledge and application skills to use and maintain tools, equipment, floral hardware, and work areas. The unit covers skills and techniques to identify, use and maintain tools, maintain and clean equipment, identify, prepare and use floral hardware, store and maintain silk, dried, and simulated flowers, and clean work areas. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 1 floral design – Asymmetrical Floral Design using Floral Tools.

Unit Content
1. Demonstrate use and maintenance of a selection of tools and equipment commonly used in the commercial floristry industry
2. Select and prepare floral hardware for use as required in assembling floral product 
3. Store and maintain silk, dried and simulated flowers and plant material 
4. Clean and maintain work and storage areas under supervision

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, the participant will have the knowledge and application skills to perform advanced wiring skills required to prepare and assemble floral products. The unit covers skills and techniques of wiring for specific floral product construction. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 2 designs – Corsage, and Headdress.

Unit Abbreviation: Select Flowers

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, the participant will have the knowledge and application skills to recognise and select flowers and plant material for use in commercial floristry, including the basic principles to correctly select quality fresh flower and plan material stock such as basic plant knowledge, functions of main plant structures and desired features and characteristics. 

Unit Content
1. State the functions of the main parts of a plant
2. Recognise the role of environmental factors when maintaining the quality of flowers and foliage
3. Recognise common plant growth habits or shapes to aid identification
4. Recognise a selection of the commonly used flowers and plant materials by the botanical and common and/or market name
5. Select quality flowers and plant material according to the desired characteristics as required in commercial floristry work

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this course, the participant will have the knowledge and application skills to assemble fresh flower bouquets. The course covers skills and techniques to assemble fresh flower bouquets in basic design forms such as flat wrap flowers, circular and spiral bouquet. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 5 different floral designs – Strauss bouquet with long stems, Strauss bouquet with short stems, Flat wrap bouquet with long stems, Round wrap bouquet with long stems, and an assessment bouquet piece.

Care and Store Fresh Flowers and Plant Material – FL-FP-101C-1/ TGS-2018501372
Unit Abbreviation: Care

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this course, learners will have the knowledge and skills and applicable skills to care for and store fresh flowers and plant material. The unit covers techniques required to receive stock, grade and check the quality, minimise cross-contamination, condition, treat and store fresh flowers, use appropriate containers for storage, dye floral material and maintain and care for potted plants. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 3 different floral designs – Parallel, Crescent, and Inverted T.

Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 3 different floral designs – Round Design, Vertical Design, and Fan Design.

Recognise the Elements and Principles of Design as Applied to Floral Artistry – FL-DS-101C-1/ TGS-2018500357
Unit Abbreviation: Elements

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, participants will have the knowledge and application skills to recognise the elements and principles of design. The unit covers skills and techniques to recognise the principles and elements of design and colour harmony in nature, art work, and floristry. The skill of drawing and sketching will enhance the florist's ability to prepare simple graphic illustrations of design. Fresh flowers, foliages, and learner guides will be provided. Students will be bringing home 3 different floral designs – Horizontal Design, Cone Design, and Symmetrical Design.

1. Recognise basic application of the elements of design to floral product

3. Recognise basic examples of varying colour schemes (harmonies)
4. Apply drawing, sketching and colour rendering to simple 2D representations of flowers, plants and floral product

Pack and Dress Hampers – FL-FS-102E-1/ TGS-2018501523
Unit Abbreviation: Hampers

Unit Objective
On successful completion of this unit, the participant will have the knowledge and application skills to pack and dress hampers. The 4 practical sessions include:

  1. Prepare corporate hampers using contemporary containers
  2. Prepare and dress a pyramid style hamper with cellophane paper
  3. Prepare and dress a western-style hamper with cellophane paper
  4. Prepare and dress a pyramid style hamper with shrink paper

Hamper packing materials, tapes, and learner guides will be provided. Do note that hamper items are not provided.

Unit Content
1. Gather and prepare contents of hamper as per order or in-house design 
2. Apply various basic styles to pack hampers 
3. Decorate hampers with dressings
4. Prepare hamper for delivery or handover to client

Funding

Certifiable courses approved by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will receive SSG's funding:

(1) Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents ≥ Age 21

(2) SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES) – for Singaporeans ≥ Age 40

 

All the applicants must attain minimum attendance of 75% in the course, attempt all assessments and be certified competent in order to be eligible for the funding. Failing which the applicant is liable to the forfeiture of the grant and bear the full course.
